Six Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated

Both doctors agree, your best defense against dehydration is prevention. These six tips can help you remain safe and healthy in high temperatures and increased activity.

1. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink. By the time you feel thirsty, you will be slightly dehydrated. Keep hydrated throughout the day, especially when it’s hot.

2. Flavor your water. Plain water can be flavored with fresh fruits or juice. Clear broths, ice pops, and sports drinks are all available for people who exercise hard. Limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

3. It is recommended to eat water-rich fruits and vegetables. Certain fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of water as well as healthy nutrients. Watermelon, strawberries, and cantaloupe are high-water fruits. All water-rich vegetables include celery, cucumbers, leafy veggies, radishes, and leafy vegetables.

4. Stay inside if it’s too hot. You should be inside if it is extremely hot. If you don’t have central AC, you can still use a cinema, library, or shopping mall. Avoid sun exposure between 10AM and 2PM, when the sun is at its strongest. You should plan outdoor activities in the morning and evening.

5. Wear clothes that are light and loose fitting, so your skin can breathe. Avoid wearing dark colors, as they absorb heat. Use lighter colors. When you’re out in the sun, don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat. This will keep your head cool. Use sunscreen. Sunburns can make your skin more sensitive, making it harder to maintain cool.

6. Here are some signs and symptoms that can indicate dehydration. Be aware of how much fluids your family members can consume, especially if they’re young or old. Anyone with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other health issues should not drink fluids. Do not wait for symptoms of dehydration to occur.
